As part of our orientation to Seattle, the DukeEngage Seattle group participated in a walking tour of the International District and the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience. Everyone wrote a ten word story as a reflection on the day:
- Today I traveled into the past but never left the present.
- This vibrant community has faced hardships unrecognized by many today.
- A historical neighborhood filled with lots of good Asian food.
- A colorful cultural center with a rich history hidden within.
- A place of tradition and transition: people supporting each other.
- We bring newly packed suitcases but remember the forgotten suitcases below.
- A historic journey which encapsulates the immigrants' lives in Seattle.
- The international district feels like a close tight knit community.
- History is what remains. How many stories will never be told?
- A fusion of cultures encapsulated by buildings, businesses, and people.
- Culture shining through in a community partially misplaced by war.
- Stories told and retold in flourishing Asian communities through history.
- A community filled with unique expressions of culture and history.
- History is all around us, we just have to look.
- City energy outside, quiet reflection inside. "The roots run deep."
- A rich cultural hotspot fusing Asian and American cultures together.
- Thoughtful and deeper understanding, appreciation, and awe of immigrant struggles.
- An entire population left the area, but they aren't forgotten.
