Emily graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California, with a B.A. in English and completed her master’s degree in Higher Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Emily spent a year on a Fulbright Fellowship in Hongseong, South Korea teaching English in a public elementary school while living with a host family and volunteering at a local youth center. Prior to coming to Duke, Emily worked as a Residence Hall Director at Greensboro College and in the U Penn Abroad office supporting incoming international exchange and outgoing study abroad students. She has directed the DukeEngage Seattle program since 2010 and values the sense of community that has been created through the supportive local Duke alumni network, community partners, and students.

Neil joined the DDNP after serving for two years as an AmeriCorps*VISTA with the North Carolina Campus Compact in Duke's Community Service Center. Prior to working at Duke, Neil worked with the American Cancer Society where he planned and coordinated six city and collegiate Relay For Life fundraising events. Neil received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. This will be Neil's second summer serving as a DukeEngage Site Coordinator. Neil previously worked with the DukeEngage Durban, South Africa program (2011). Neil looks forward to meeting all of the students, alumni, and community partners working with the DukeEngage Seattle program. "DukeEngage offers an incredible opportunity to grow in our understanding of what it means to be civically engaged. Let's all learn and serve together".
Erin Bergstrom, DukeEngage Seattle Site Coordinator
Erin Bergstrom (UNC-Chapel Hill Master of Social Work candidate) is passionate about social, economic, and environmental justice. As a social entrepreneur and counselor, Erin focuses on the intersection of love, compassion, connection, and community. Her experience includes work with Passage Home, a Raleigh, North Carolina non-profit whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, and Raleigh City Farm, an urban farm she co-founded dedicated to a more just food system. Erin currently works with students and adults through the UNC Psychology Clinic and the UNC Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health. Time spent volunteering as an undergraduate student was a transformative and liberating experience for Erin and she looks forward to facilitating similar opportunities for DukeEngage Seattle students!
